Friday – ODE Scorekeeping

The Prodigal Son Returns
Returning to ODE scorekeeping after a 5 month break was pretty interesting, I was pretty worried I had forgotten most of what I learned back in September. But I was pleasantly surprised at the amount that came back to me! It was a lot more exciting this time around since it was so hectic at MF Toronto, and there were lots of little exciting logistical problems to solve. Like players wanting to switch draft pods or draft with certain friends after having signed up. There was also a period of time where 2HG drafts weren't being handled properly in Kefka, so we were doing them manually.

Saturday – Scheduled Sides Scorekeeping

New Software, Who Dis?
Saturday I was on scheduled sides, for the second time ever, and more importantly I got to use WALTR! WALTR aesthetically is to WER what Arena is to MTGO. WER has a better player entry system, however WLTR has a better result entering system. One major issue I had was that when I entered results and then clicked “drop” it would clear the results from the fields but not enter them, only drop the player. Which sent me slip hunting more than once, until I figured out that was the issue. The MQ was only 150 players so WLTR wasn't mandatory but it was nice to get the experience, entering penalties was also something I haven't done since the PPTQ days ended.

Pre-Splitting
In a lot of side events, oftentimes players will go 2-0 and then try to draw with their last round opponent so they can run off to another side event. It's a little frustrating for people who want to split if their opponent says “no” and frustrating for the opponent if the player who wanted to split has to run off to another event. CFBE must've realized that players playing more events is a good thing because they have now offered the option for players to bring their 2-0 slips to the prize tix station at the end of R2 and get prizes as though they were 2-0-1. This is awesome! I think it's a fantastic move for both players and CFBE's business model, which aren't often things that correlate this nicely. Logistically this is accomplished by marking drop for all the players that brought their 2-0 slips up and transporting them to the SK at some point before the round turns. It seems like it would be a nightmare, but actually implementing is was super smooth!

Sunday – ODE Scorekeeping

Sunday, Sunday, SUNDAY!!
Sunday was rather hectic, ODEs were very busy, 130 ODEs launched in total. There was one point in the afternoon where I hit a pretty significant crunch and had a tough time keeping up with all the events, but I never fell too far behind that it became a player problem.

...In Conclusion
I enjoyed Toronto a lot more than the other times I have done scorekeeping, it was very busy, and I also enjoyed how I could work different aspects of registration when things got slower for me. Overall, I still know that I enjoy being on the floor more than anything else, but appreciate the change of pace every now and again, I also had a good time learning WLTR. I think scorekeeping can be a lot of fun if the day is busy enough, so as long as MagicFests keep capping out, Scorekeeping will still be fun. The last few things on my scorekeeping punch card are LCTs and Main Event. I'll be hitting LCTs at Los Angeles, and maybe I'll get to be Scorekeeping number 2 for main in Niagara? I'm looking forward to the future.
